Author's Rambling: After reading something MariaOrange88 posted last night, it got me thinking about the 'morality' of fan fiction. Does fanfiction insult those that are written about? Is fanfiction right?
I've had that discussion with myself various times, as well as w/other people. The things I hear the most are, "You're so talented. Why are you wasting your time writing crap that someone else all ready wrote about" (my mom in regards to a Dogma fic she found on my computer and I don't know what she was doing snooping around anyway but I digress.)
I see my fanfiction as an homage to the game of hockey. Sure, some people might take a look at my Bure story and say, "You sicko! You made them perverts! Roast in hell you gross homo!" Well, I don't see it that way. I see it as sort of like, "I love this game so much, I'm going to write about it." I don't see my writing as cheapening hockey or the players. I'm just one fan paying 'tribute', per se, to the sport.
I also see fanfiction as an escape from regular fiction. I use it as a tool w/my other writing. Sometimes I use things I wrote in fanfiction stories in my original fiction. I used parts of When It's Over in an original hockey 'novel' I wrote. I used parts of a Kevin Smith fanfic in an original story. I've pretty much always looked at fanfic as a writing tool, a stepping block, to my original fiction.
Of course, if Pavel Bure stumbled across my story on ff.net, I'd be embarrassed, and that's just because I don't enjoy sharing my work with 'real' people. I'm fine with screennames because I don't have any emotional attachment to them. That's one of the reasons I won't share any of my writing with my family. I am confident enough in my writing, that I can say I wouldn't be embarrassed because, "Oh my God, I'm gonna get sued by Pavel Bure."
And I wouldn't mind getting sued by Bure. It'd get me in the newspapers for SOMETHING other than my (eventual) obituary.
In conclusion:
OMIGOD I SAW A SQUIREL ON THE ROAD AND HE DIDN'T GET RUN OVER BY A CAR, AND I'M LIKE, "WHEEEEEEEEEEE!"
GONADS IN THE LIGHTNING!
GONADS IN THE LIGHTNING!
GONADS AND STRIFE GONADS AND STRIFE GONADS AND STRIIIIII-IIIII-IIIIII-FE!
Thus ends the rambling Author's Editorial,
